About the Event

September 26th is National Public Lands Day which is a free entry day at

Shenandoah National Park and Skyline Drive. This free day is a considerable saving

since normally the entry cost is $23 per vehicle. Our plan is to ride to Front Royal

and enter Skyline drive at milepost zero (0) and ride 51 miles to the Big Meadows

Lodge and Campground area where we will eat lunch at one of the picnic tables. Big

Meadows is the halfway point on the Skyline drive and our turning around point. We

will ride back 21 miles on Skyline Drive from Big Meadows and exit the park at

Thornton Gap which is near Sperryville, Virginia. From there we will ride back on a

more or less direct route cross back into Maryland at Point of Rocks or Whites Ferry

and then head home. The ride to and from Skyline drive is very scenic but it is also

very long and tiring so make sure you get plenty of rest the night before and try and

pre-hydrate. We will stop often to give everyone rest breaks. This is a BYOS (Bring

Your Own Sandwich) ride where everyone is encouraged to bring their own

sandwiches and drinks. We will stop at a 7-11 or nearby market prior to lunch so

that if you don’t bring a sandwich you can always buy one. Please come gassed up

and ready to go. Try and arrive by 7:45am in order to complete the ride paperwork

and receive the pre-ride briefing so that we can depart on time at 8:00am. Also,

remember to bring your ubiquitous face mask.
